Woven and Wrapped: Kimonos, Clothing and Culture of Early 20th Century Japan

Nov 11th - Feb 11th, 2012

Woven and Wrapped: Kimonos, Clothing and Culture of Early 20th Century Japan

Kimonos, first created in 600 B.C., are traditional Japanese wraparound garments made of vertical panels of cloth sewn together, bound with a sash (obi) and worn with a half-length jacket and a full-length under-robe.

Throughout the centuries, silk gauze or fine linen has been used to make kimonos for both street and formal wear. Styles have ranged from elaborately layered garments to simple silk robes. Improvements in dyeing processes have allowed for more colorful and detailed kimonos.

This exhibition will include kimonos and obis ranging from intricate wedding kimonos to more formal garments worn by single or married women while visiting. The wedding kimono is one of the most striking, with a red or white long outer robe that is decorated with embroidery or brocade. Two layers of white robes are worn underneath, and the bride wears a white hood.

The exhibition is prepared by Blair-Murrah, an exhibition service that provides a number of exhibits on a variety of historical and contemporary subjects to organizations throughout the world.

This exhibtion supported in part by Sacred Heart Health Systems.

Three Hots and a Cot: Photography by E.J. Manton

 Three Hots and a Cot

photography by

E.J. Manton

November 3 to December 30, 2011

Three Hots and a Cotlooks at the everyday lives of Florida’s homeless, capturing the moments of sadness, frustration and joy in lives too often overlooked.

During the Manton exhibition, homeless clients served by the Faithworks Interfaith Ministries Network, Inc. will be in the Museum crafting tote bags and other items from discarded billboards - polyethylene material made with biodegradable dyes. The program provides area homeless with training and skills and a paycheck to help them get back on their feet.

The sewing stations will be set up in the PMA throughout the E.J. Manton exhibition, Nov. 3 through Dec. 30, and the clients will be working, sewing and creating every day during regular Museum hours. The billboards are donated by Lamar Advertising, Inc., which takes down more than 300 billboards every month in the Pensacola Area. Each item is cut from a unique piece of billboard, so no two are alike. Tote bags and other pieces created by the program are priced beginning at just $8 and are available for purchase at the PMA.

The sewers will be working in the Museum every day of the exhibition - through Dec. 30. So, stop by and visit and have them make you a custom item from the billboards on display in the Museum.

Joan MirĂ³: Order and Chaos

Aug 22nd - Nov 12th, 2011

Join us for a closing reception and lecture at 5:30 p.m., November 10. Our presenter will be John Olsen, visual arts professor at Pensacola State College. The wine and cheese reception will begin at 5:30 p.m,; the lecture will begin at 6 p.m..

The final day of the Miro exhibition will be Saturday, November 12.

A survey of the work of Spanish artist Joan Miro is in many ways, a survey of the art movements of much of the 20th century. This exhibition of prints highlights Miro's importance to the graphic medium, and reveals his influence on the development of modern art.

Of the three major Spanish artists of the 20th century--Picasso, Miro, and Gris--Miro maintained the closest links with his native land. He spent part of his time in Catalonia, and part in Paris, and his work received its most powerful stimuli from the tensions set up by this constant exchange between the two worlds.

Miro was a Surrealist in that he sought to destroy the dominance of reason and logic in order to release the creative forces of the unconscious. He tried to fathom the secrets of the invisible as well as the visible world.

From the late 1920's until his death, Miro produced a large number and wide range of graphic works. The prints in this exhibition reflect his use of Surrealism as a way of integrating his cultural roots with his artistic convictions. He often focused on the warring impulses that have characterized much of the art produced during the 20th century--the twin drives of order and chaos, timidity and outrageousness wage war within Miro's work. The exhibition traces a career that took many turns, and gives viewers a better understanding of the attitudes and expressions of one of the most influential artists of the modern art movement.

The Art Books of Henri Matisse

Feb 26th - Jun 26th, 2010

This exhibition features original illustrations and text by one of the preeminent French artists of the twentieth century. Best known for his boldly colored paintings, Matisse was in his sixties and a renowned artist when he began to make books. He regarded the prints he created for books as an extension of drawing. The same flowing lines that characterized so many of his paintings carried over to the printmaking medium and related illustrations. Matisse eventually illustrated 12 books; each issued in a limited edition and signed by the artist. The exhibition includes text and original illustrations from four of Matisse's most artistically significant books.

This exhibition is made available to the Pensacola Museum of Art as part of the Bank of America Art Exhibition Program.

The Pensacola Museum of Art will host an opening reception Friday evening, February 26th, at 6 p.m. The public is invited. Admission is free.
