Coast & Countryside: Selections from the Spanierman Gallery, New York
July 18 – August 30, 2008
Lewis Bear Family Galleries

This exhibition consists of a selection of coastal and countryside scenes of New England created by prominent American artists primarily from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century. During this period, the rural areas of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and their shores offered an especially appealing picturesque variety to American artists. Scenes of New England were perceived to transcend a purely local value, embodying an important aspect of our national identity. The region’s small towns, peaceful farmlands, and rural byways provided an image of restorative stability and spiritual refreshment that seemed a counterforce to the dramatic changes occurring elsewhere in the nation under the impact of immigration, industrialization, and development. Coast & Countryside provides a perfect balance of light and landscape reflecting the essence of what we appreciate in New England.

This exhibition is organized by the Pensacola Museum of Art in collaboration with the Spanierman Gallery, LLC.

Cardinal Points/Puntos Cardinales: A Survey of Contemporary Latino and Latin American Art from the Sprint Nextel Art Collection
August 15 – October 25, 2008
Kugelman Family and Thornton Galleries

Cardinal Points/Puntos Cardinales employs the concept of the four cardinal points on a compass to survey a number of the key ways contemporary artists have “mapped” or examined their personal and cultural identities, histories, values and the world around them. The artwork and bilingual exhibition text introduce the most dominant themes and creative approaches to Latino art produced during the last two decades.

Expressions of Pop: Jasper Johns since 1960
October 31, 2008 – January 10, 2009
Kugelman Family and Thornton Galleries

Expressions of Pop: Jasper Johns since 1960 covers 40 years of printmaking from one of America's most revered artists. Jasper Johns (b. 1930) emerged in the 1950s as a leading artist of the generation that followed “The New York School” of Abstract Expressionists. He is most widely known for his paintings of flags, targets, numbers, alphabets, and maps. Johns is an innovator of Pop Art, incorporating elements of popular culture and everyday objects directly into his work. Highly influential as a painter and printmaker, Johns continues to anticipate trends in contemporary art, astonishing the public, while still presenting extraordinarily beautiful and enigmatic work.

All work is from the collection of the John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation
